Legal Departments Seek Cost-Effective
Counsel
General counsel continue to focus on controlling the costs of outside counsel. Legal departments are also focusing on better management of e-discovery processes and costs.
Many GCs are bringing more work in-house to contain costs and obtain more competitive pricing from law firms.
"I'm looking for outside firms that recognize the role and value of in-house counsel and make us look good."
– Robin H. Sangston, vice president of legal affairs, Cox Communications
Legal departments are more frequently requesting alternative fee arrangements from outside counsel, such as contingency fees, flat or capped fees, success fees, volume discounts and blended fees. In-house counsel are using specialized teams of project attorneys and support personnel for large-scale projects and litigation or e-discovery matters.
